Yu Nagaba’s Artwork Reincarnated into two-and-a-half Dimentional Art Piece Exclusiviely Available at TOKION https://tokion.jp/en/2021/07/16/tokion-x-yu-nagaba/ Fri, 16 Jul 2021 02:00:00 +0000 https://tokion.jp/?p=46157 A re-creation of the characteristic warm hand drawn lines. TOKION will be taking preorders for the two-and-a-half dimensional art piece made in collaboration with artist Yu Nagaba, with online ordering. The pre-order period is from July 16th at 11AM JST to August 8th at 11:59PM JST, and shipping will begin in late October. During the pre-order period, the sample of the actual art piece will be exhibited at TOKiON the STORE located in MIYASHITA PARK. Available for purchase at the price of 60,000 yen each.

For this collaboration, Nagaba has produced an artwork of a movie director and artist and morphed it into a two-and-a-half dementional art piece. With a white backboard as the base, the work is rendered with the unique, warm hand drawn lines, concisely yet deftly capturing the characteristics of the subjects.

Also, Wellington-style glasses and Boston-style sunglasses are both actually wearble. The two eyeglasses are each handmade in Sabae in Fukui prefecture, which is a city renowned for eyewear manufacturing; the right and the left lens of the sunglasses are specially made to fit into the respective frames. Ultimately, these unconventional eyeglasses were originally spawned from the artist’s hand drawn artwork. It is created into an art piece that is not only a décor but can also be donned as a fashion item for going out.

In addition, T-shirts with the artwork(5,500yen) will also be available in two different colors. They can be purchased online and at TOKiON the STORE.

Vintage clothing store weber will be holding the exhibition ”大Tシャツ展” (Dai T-shirt Ten) at “TOKiON the STORE” in MIYASHITA PARK, Shibuya from June 17th to 30th. TOKION online store will also accept domestic and international orders outside of the business hours of the actual store (from 21:00 to 11:00 of the next day). In commemoration of this event, Hitoshi Ikeda from weber and renowned editor Kunichi Nomura will be holding an Instagram live event. Further details will be announced at a later date on weber’s official Instagram account(@weber71_).

Instead of having a single fixed location, weber is a nomadic vintage clothing store that sets up shop in different commercial facilities around Tokyo. Led by Ikeda, who has experience in the apparel sector, the team’s main focus is to do what they like most while collecting and selling vintage items such as movies, music, and art. They also participate in different collaborations with movie projects. The exhibition “大Tシャツ展“ (Dai T-shirt Ten) can be interpreted as the culmination of weber’s work, where T-shirts of all kinds will be on show, ranging from items worth a few thousand of yen to rare T-shirts reaching hundreds of thousands of yen in value.

For the first time in over a year, our exhibition lineup will be showcasing nearly a thousand T-shirts. Movie-themed T-shirts are especially more abundant than anywhere else, with their values recently skyrocketing in the vintage market, causing many brands and shops to sample and reprint them. The lineup includes classic masterpieces such as Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and other popular films from the 90s such as Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting, which T-shirts are often reprinted, and films from the 21st century such as  Spirited Away, 8 Mile, and Isle of Dogs.

In addition, weber has prepared a wide range of items such as T-shirts by photographer Bruce Weber (which the store’s name originated from), art, music, and corporate promotional products.

【Update】The host has announced the postponement of Thundercat’s Postponed Japan Tour once again due to the extension of emergency declaration and restrictions imposed on venue capacity. Please check out the official website for further information.

At the 63rd Grammy Awards that took place in March, Stephen Bruner—well known as Thundercat—has won The Best Progressive R&B Album for his album, It Is What It Is. The album—co-produced with his ally, Flying Lotus—is a lavish opus featuring guests including Childish Gambino, Kamasi Washington, and Lil B.
Bruner is also known as a huge fan of Japanese culture and anime; as one of his famous episodes, “Tokyo” MV was filmed in Japan expressing his love towards the Japanese culture.

The anticipated Japan tour of the most prolific, popular and important artist extolled all over the world—which, by the way, has been postponed twice—is scheduled at the end of June. Subsequently after we heard the announcement of the tour, we have decided to release the artist’s highly coveted official goods.

This time, the merch comes in two different styles—a T-shirt and a long sleeve T-shirt —with a flamboyant photo printed on the front: It is a sarcastic design imbued with Thundercat’s character with the word “POSTPONED” printed across the photo.

As well as the long-awaited Japan tour, don’t miss out the official goods of the artist highly praised in fashion. The goods will be available from May 29th at TOKiON the STORE and TOKION’s official online store. Also, be sure to check out BEATINK’s official website for the Grammy award winning album, It Is What It Is, which now comes with an exclusive hologram sticker.

YOSHIROTTEN constructs an extraordinary worldview through graphic design, spatial design and video direction. His futuristic worldview is highly lauded both in Japan and abroad, and there are many fervent fans of his ingenious creations.

The pottery collection with the designs that the worldwide artist YOSHIROTTEN has provided just for TOKION, which is the second collaboration since last year, has launched from April 30th at TOKION’s official online store.

The Japanese tradition and neo-future coexisting in the pottery collection

These plates that are crafted with the traditional techniques of Arita ware are available in four different kinds, including a soba cup and a small plate, which are wholly selected by soba-lover YOSHIROTTEN, who travels all over Japan just for soba; and come in two different colors: grey and Japanese traditional color vermillion. YOSHIROTTEN has kindly commented on the release: “I love soba and everything about it including the atmosphere of soba restaurants, plates, and steam from hot soba water—so I was happy to produce the collection. Under the theme of ‘new types of souvenir from Tokyo’, I drew the three-dimensional graphics as the neo-futuristic versions of the inspiring traditional Japanese patterns such as Ichimatsu and pine bark patterns.”

The collection is exclusively available at TOKiON the STORE and TOKION’s official online store. Also, make sure to check out the T-shirt and long sleeve T-shirt reproduced and released along with the collection.

※Following the business closure requests to prevent the further spread of novel coronavirus, until further notice, ‘TOKiON the STORE’ will be temporarily closed―so, please visit our online store to purchase the products.

The film’s official merchandise, which was designed and created by curatorial brand ATW, will also be available from TOKION starting March 26th.

“Style Wars,” a documentary film that chronicles the growing subculture of Hip-Hop during the early ’80s, will hit theaters on March 26th (Friday). Starting with Shibuya’s White Cine Quinto and Shinjuku Musashino-kan, the film is scheduled to gradually be released nationwide.

In Japan, “Style Wars” was released on DVD in 2004, but never made it to theaters. The seminal documentary exposes the rich growing subculture of Hip-Hop that was developing in New York City in the late ’70s and early ’80s, specifically focusing on graffiti art and B-boying.The culture would later take the world by storm.  Along with “Wild Style,” which was produced during the same period, Style Wars is regarded as the indispensable document of New York Street culture of the early ’80s, and revered by Hip-Hop heads around the globe.

Nearly 40 years since the film’s creation, the graffiti artists featured in the film have influenced figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Banksy, all of whom came to treat graffiti as an art form. This documentary gives the viewer a sense of the history and atmosphere of Hip-Hop, which has become part of mainstream culture; today, musicians from all over the world incorporate rap into their songs and the Paris 2024 Olympics have even added breakdancing as a sport.

Collectors’ Items on Sale

Starting on the same day as the film’s release, collector’s items such as official t-shirts and hoodies designed and created by curatorial brand ATW, will be available from TOKION for a limited time.

The “NYC 1982” tee celebrates that glorious year in Hip-Hop culture that’s best remembered in the film Style Wars and honors all those who helped make 1982 one memorable year. This shirt features “The Message,” “Style Wars,” legendary graffiti artist “Dondi,”  B-boy pioneers“Rock Steady Crew,” and “Ed Koch,” the mayor of New York in 1982. Available in L and XL.¥4,000.

Comments from influential figures in Japanese-hip hop and other artists leading the scene.

Seiko Ito (Writer/Creator)
“I can’t believe this film is still out there! And it’s clear from this raw documentary [as we can see in “Wild Style”], but there were many Latinos and others in the hip-hop community at this time. The way the different races were existing alongside one another in these early days can’t be emphasized enough.

ANI (Scha Dara Parr)
“This is an important documentary that captures the early days of Hip-Hop. I get really excited watching this. If you have even a little bit of interest in street art, don’t miss this.”

Cypress Ueno (Rapper)
“Wow, we can really see this on the big screen? As someone who first saw this movie as a copied bootleg video that was passed onto me by a senpai, this is amazing! Even if we’re in a different time, the fight that we need to be fighting is to keep putting ourselves out there.”

DARTHREIDER (Rapper)
“Repeating boring mistakes, repainting the cityscape! The vibes we remember when we look back. The way KASE2 says ‘style’ is the coolest in the world. Why? Because he’s the king. Society has another side. To realize that, look at the walls! Look at the trains! The only thing you need to watch out for is the third rail.”

BBOY KATSU ONE (MIGHTY ZULU KINGZ/READY TO ROCK)
“Transforming the power of young people who have no place to go into art, and turning that into an expression of the self. No matter what form it’s in, you become powerful when you find a way to express yourself. I think this teaches something important, especially for young people today.”

MC KENSAKU (ex BRONX・MC・Bboy)
“These are legends who built the culture from the ground up without knowing the answers. There was a time when people put their pride on the line and gave their all, even though they knew they were doing something illegal. This is an important part of global history that connects to the present day!”

Since its airing on television in 1995, the Evangelion series has continued to gain fans across generations and national borders. In order to unravel the beautiful and mysterious story of Evangelion, with its complex themes, relationships, and its characters’ mental landscapes, fans and researchers of the series have carried out various studies and analyses. The series, which has maintained its popularity for more than 20 years, is to be considered a social phenomenon going beyond the simple image of an animated show and is established as one of the most representative creations of Japan; its film series Rebuild of Evangelion, which started in 2007, will finally come to an end with its last installation Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, released on March 8. Many will be looking forward to a completely unpredictable ending.

At “TOKiON the STORE”, a collection of Evangelion merchandise products will be on sale from March 8, co-produced by the creative collective AMKK, led by flower artist Makoto Azuma and botanical photographer Shunsuke Shiinoki, who have collaborated with various luxury brands around the world. In addition to T-shirts, long-sleeve T-shirts and hoodies, the collection will include an MA-1 bomber jacket from “Alpha Industries” and winter sandals from “SUBU.”

In line with the collaboration, AMKK also produced four different artworks based on EVA Unit 01, 00, 02, and 08. AMKK’s creative concept is based around the themes of life and death in flowers, fully pursuing their beauty from their full bloom form to after they wither; this can also be found inside the work created in collaboration with Evangelion, which aims to display the flowers’ strength and vitality while respecting Evangelion’s original color schemes. The beauty of such tones is emphasized by the Evangelion comfortably blending into the bouquet’s colors.

Furthermore, AMKK also produced graphics of the “Decisive Battle Weapon” Evangelions holding a bouquet instead of their weapons. The company has been pursuing the diverse beauty of flowers since its beginnings; now, its collaboration with Evangelion, which story always reminds its viewers of the duality of life and death, lets us recognize their beauty in both forms.

An interview about this production with AMKK’s Makoto Azuma will be released soon.
